Here's why the Ford Escape is a better choice than the Honda CR-V

The compact SUV segment is incredibly competitive, and at Oracle Ford in Tucson AZ we're proud that our Ford Escape is such a strong contender in the field. We're certain that after you take the Escape for a test drive you'll be eager to buy or lease one!

Since we know you're probably also going to test drive a few other options, we'll make researching easier for you by comparing the Ford Escape to the Honda CR-V - a model that is one of the Escape's biggest rivals. We'll review the performance, safety, and features you can find on both models and, fingers crossed, prove why ours is the better choice.

An area where Ford often shines is performance, as each model often has several engines to choose from; in this case, the Escape has three options. The base S trim has a 2.5L engine with 168 horsepower. The SE and SEL have a 1.5L EcoBoost with 179 horsepower and a tow rating up to 2,000 pounds. The top-level Titanium trim has a 2.0L EcoBoost with 245 horsepower and can tow up to 3,500 pounds!

We love how these engines can meet different buyer needs. Engines with lower horsepower are ideal for those on a budget/those who don't need a ton of performance. Conversely, if you want more zip (or plan on driving around a car that is filled with people and gear) the EcoBoost has your back.

The CR-V has two options. The base model gets a 2.4L with 184 horsepower, and the remaining trims get a 1.5L turbocharged with 190 horsepower. While Both the CR-V engines are stronger than the first two Escape trims, you don't get a high-powered option or even much of a boost past the base engine. The CR-V also has a weak tow rating of up to only 1,500 pounds.

Both models can have comfortable power-seating, leather interiors for the higher trim levels, a hands-free power lift gate, and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ capabilities (granted the Escape's screen is 8-inches compared to the CR-V's 7-inch screen.)

The CR-V can get a moonroof, but we think you'll like the larger panoramic option on the Escape. The SE trim on the Escape also can get a flashy Appearance Package for drivers who want more style, whereas the CR-V has no such stylin' upgrade option.

Safety is important and different brands have different approaches. Many have specific packages with advanced safety technologies, and Honda's is called Honda Sensing®. Honda works hard to entice customers to buy their compact SUV by making it standard on all trims, minus the base.

We personally like Ford's approach. They offer a package called Ford Safe and Smart and it includes the following features:

  • Adaptive cruise control & forward collision warning with brake support
  • Auto high-beam headlamps
  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-Keeping System

You also get rain-sensing windshield wipers, a windshield wiper de-icer, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. The difference is that instead of making it standard for everyone, the package is optional on all trims except for the base.

We think this distinction is important, as not all shoppers want to have these onboard the vehicle they're choosing to buy or lease. With the package they get to choose the type of protection to have as they drive around Oracle AZ and beyond! It also keeps the price tag more affordable.

That said, all Escape's do come standard with basic but useful safety features, including a backup camera, Bluetooth for hands-free calls and music streaming, and in the case of an accident there is an SOS Post-Crash Alert System that signals to drivers and emergency responders that you were in an accident and that the airbags deployed.

The Ford Escape and the Honda CR-V do have some similarities when it comes to amenities, but we like that the Escape has a more robust engine lineup and that drivers can choose if they want advanced safety technologies or not.
